Gary Bourgois gives you the impression that Marquette, Michigan is a few steps away from the edge of the earth.  Actually, it is a charming place, a town with a vast forest on many sides.

Spring Street looking west. To the left is an ascending hill to which Spring Street is at the bottom. Across from Gary's home is a tall apartment building.  His home is on the south side with his view of the sat arc being uphill.  Therefore the need for a large platform to stage his dishes.

Gary's home is in an area of old homes being restored.  Fresh paint is everywhere.   Look at the era of the street lamp in front.  His driveway has Elaine's pickup in it, to the left of the home.
